Modeling thermal effect with Abaqus

For the Abaqus simulator to properly include temperature effects, the following is required:

  • Use of a material model including thermal expansion in at least one zone, see Material Parameters
  • The initial temperature is provided, see Temperature
  • A dynamic temperature, which contains temperature values at all required time steps for all nodes on the mesh, is created, see Create temperature
  • A dynamic pore pressure must always be provided in an Abaqus case
  • Time steps are selected, see Steps

If these requirements are met, the Abaqus deck contains the relevant parts as listed below:

  • *EXPANSION line for materials

Expansion is listed in the Materials section for the zone of interest    click to enlarge

  • *INITIAL CONDITIONS TemperatureIC.txt + include file

The Initial conditions section with the initial temperature text file.    click to enlarge

  • STEPS temperature + include files

Reference temperature - at this temperature there is no expansion (as used in Abaqus )

Expansion coefficient - this is the linear expansion coefficient (as used in Abaqus)
